The Staycation – Elderly Vacation Ideas

With rising gas costs, skim finances, or mobility issues, you may find yourself staying close to home without many vacation plans. So how about considering a “staycation?”
What is a Staycation?
A “Staycation” is taking your vacation time from work and enjoying family time from the comfort of your own home. It may be just enjoying some of your favorite activities in your own back yard or taking advantage of some of the sites your home town may offer. You may even consider small road trips to visit attractions in neighboring towns. Of course you will need to take into account the health and mobility level of your loved one.
Be creative and try to do something different from the usual daily routine. The best vacations are those that get us out of our usual rut and give us a new perspective on ourselves, the world around us and others. There is no need to travel far to mix things up a bit!
Learning New Things
Try to do simple things to let them know they are special. Surprise your loved ones with breakfast in bed and for an extra touch, include a small vase with their favorite flower. What was a favorite past time activity, hobby, sport, arts and craft? What were some of their favorite pastimes in your loved one’s youth? Even if he or she can no longer participate, there is still enjoyment in just observing sometimes. Was your loved one in a bowling league? Did he play on a softball or baseball team? If golf was her thing, maybe miniature golf? A museum may spark some memories or a zoo could bring out the inner child. Is there a favorite old movie that you could rent? Does he or she enjoy the theater?
Local Treasures
Sightseeing or dinner cruises can be wonderful if available. If you would eat out during a vacation then eat out during your staycation – keeping in mind what the favorite foods or restaurants are or trying something new. Plan a day at the beach or the pool. Many state parks provide a beach for recreation purposes. Be sure some shade can be provided. Reminiscing through a thrift shop or flea market can be most enjoyable. While visiting the local park plan a picnic or a family barbecue. A day trip to a favorite amusement park can be a lot of fun.
Remember to look into handicap accessibility if there is a need. Since this staycation is also for your elderly loved one, be sure not to make it too challenging for them. Take time to relax. A staycation is not about using the time to catch up on chores; it’s about spending time with family. Plan as if you were going away. Planning activities ahead of time will ensure that your staycation is about rest, relaxation and making memories. Deviate from daily routines and truly make it a vacation!
