This Tingle Sensation May Help Alleviate Stress for Caregivers

When’s the last time you got a haircut? Did you get tingles from the sounds of the scissors cutting your hair? If so, then you’ve probably experienced some form of ASMR. ASMR is known as Autonomy Sensory Meridian Response. This sensation occurs when a person experience tingles from watching videos with specific triggers. Some examples of ASMR triggers include whispers, taps on certain material or objects, speaking softly and role-play. When the trigger happens, the individual falls into a state of relaxation and gets a tingly sensation which starts at the top of the head.

Why should you care about ASMR? Well, it could be something you use to manage daily stress. We all deal with certain levels of stress on a daily basis and how we manage our stress is important to our well-being. For those of us who are caring for others, it’s even more essential to take care of ourselves. Caregiver burnout is a common problem people of all ages experience and can be prevented if caregivers start to gauge their health and wellness.  Caregivers are also some of the busiest people in the world so if a video can alleviate a couple minute of their stress, why shouldn’t they consider it?

study done at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom found that individuals who experience ASMR triggers benefit emotionally and physiologically when watching ASMR videos. Individuals in this study reported the highest levels of positive emotions and their heart rates dropped after the study.

Other studies show ASMR has helped people with relaxation, stress, anxiety, sleeplessness and insomnia, depression, chronic pain and more. More detailed information can be found here

Other Benefits of ASMR

  • ASMR can be experienced in the comfort of your own home. At the moment most ASMR videos are free and available on Youtube.
  • Some types of ASMR videos can be considered as another form of meditation – Some ASMR videos include positive affirmations and help with better sleep and anxiety.
  • There are many different styles of ASMR videos available to fit the preferences of different people.
  • ASMR may also be used for your loved ones during times when they may need comforting. People who are home bound can benefit from watching these videos without leaving their house.

Disclaimer: ASMR cannot replace any medication or professional treatment. If you have sleep, anxiety, or psychological troubles or other health condition please consult your physician. NorthShore does not recommend using ASMR as a replacement or substitution for professional medical care.

If you enjoy hearing sounds or like to meditate, then ASMR may be something to consider to watch in your free time. It is a rather growing community of positive people. ASMR artists take pride in their art and production of their videos and they create a positive sense of belonging to their viewers. This sense of belonging and positivity may be something caregivers can watch before bed and can help them unwind. If you are a caregiver and don’t feel the “tingles” from ASMR, then make sure that you are involved in other stress management activities that will help you throughout your day.  We have another blog that talks about stress management and preventing caregiver burnout here
